Located just 50 miles from Houston and a few hours from the Gulf of Mexico, El Campo has been dubbed by many “The Pearl of the Prairie.” Agriculture has always been at the heart of El Campo, beginning with cattle and hay farming in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Rice production is big here but so is barbecue. In 1997, legislators passed a proclamation declaring Wharton County the “International Barbecue Capital” in recognition of its many barbecue restaurants.
